Although they provide valuable fiber and phytonutrients like other vegetables, cruciferous vegetables are nutritionally unique because of their sulfur-containing compounds known as glucosinolates. Glucosinolates are metabolized into compounds like indole 3-carbinol (I3C) and di-indolemethane (DIM). Cruciferous vegetables, I3C and DIM have all been studied for their effect on estrogen metabolism and possible preventative role in hormone-related health problems.¹
